Federal Judge has Remands Polar Bear’s Listing Back to USFWS

A federal judge has remanded the polar bear’s “threatened” listing back to the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), because he felt that the Service has not sufficiently justified listing the bear as “threatened” rather than “endangered”. Endangered status means that a species is at risk of extinction. Threatened status means that a species is at risk of becoming endangered. The two statuses are similar, but the endangered status offers stronger protection, due to the level of threat. Now, the USFWS must provide compelling evidence for the threatened status.
Make your voice heard! Contact Interior Secretary, Ken Salazar, and tell him to list the polar bear as an endangered species, due to the threat of extinction attributed to habitat loss (loss of sea ice). Send letters to:
