Reminder–Bear Honoring is this weekend!!

12th Annual International Mulitcultural Bear Honoring
April 29-May 1, 2011

The Great Bear Foundation invites you to join us in welcoming the bears out of hibernation and celebrating spring! Bear Honoring is a multicultural, weekend long event in the tradition of spring bear celebrations that have occurred for thousands of years in cultures around the world.

BEAR WALK, BEAR FOODS BUFFET & EVENING PROGRAMS–April 29, 4:30 PM, Greenough Park, Missoula. Suggested donation: $20.

We’ll kick off the weekend with a bear walk along Rattlesnake Creek at 4:30, where GBF President Chuck Jonkel will identify wild bear foods, point out bear sign, and look for black bear denning sites. Sample spring bear foods at the Bear Foods Buffet at 6:00, followed by presentations from bear specialists and Tribal representatives about the bear’s role in natural and cultural history. We’ll also have a Karelian Bear Dog demonstration from Carrie Hunt of the Wind River Bear Institute.

TOUR OF SKC ART DEPARTMENT, KICKING HORSE POWWOW, & LOOKING FOR BEARS IN THE MISSION MOUNTAINS–Saturday, April 30. Meet at GBF office, 802 E Front Street, Missoula, at 9:00 AM

Join us as we head to Salish Kootenai College in Pablo, MT for a tour of the Art Department with Director, Corky Clairmont. Then, we’ll head to the Powwow at Kicking Horse Job Corps, where we sponsor a bear dance. We’ll wrap up the day exploring the Mission Mountains, looking for bears and bear sign. Ride in our van for $20, or caravan in your own vehicle.

BEAR VIEWING IN GLACIER NATIONAL PARK–Sunday, May 1. Meet at GBF office at 9:00 AM, or at Avalanche Gate in GNP at 12:45.

On Sunday, we’ll head up to Glacier Park to spend the afternoon walking the Park Road, learning about bears and their habitat, and looking for bears in the avalanche chutes. Ride in our van for $20, caravan in your own vehicle, or meet us at the Avalanche Gate at 12:45.
