Help Support Noninvasive Grizzly Bear Research

The Great Bear Foundation, along with other partner organizations, is proud to help sponsor the research of University of Montana wildlife biology student and GBF intern, Tucker Seitz, as he examines degradation rates of DNA in grizzly bear hair samples under varying conditions. Seitz’s research will help to answer questions not previously addressed that will help in further development of non-invasive genetic sampling (NGS) techniques in wildlife research. NGS techniques lessen the impacts of research on wildlife, providing accurate, comprehensive data without capturing, handling, and immobilizing animals with the use of drugs. NGS also reduces risks to field researchers by lessening the need to capture and handle wildlife, while at the same time ultimately reducing research costs, allowing biologists to maximize the data collected while expending fewer resources.
