Check Out This Video for a Picture of Polar Bear Season in Churchill

December 11th, 2010

We would have liked to see some attention to the negative effects of current tourism practices on polar bears, but overall, this is a decent piece of journalism on the Churchill polar bears. While the loss of sea ice due to climate change is the biggest threat facing polar bears, there are many other human-related threats, including oil and gas development, overhunting, toxins in the food chain, and unethical tourism.

From tundra vehicles tearing up the habitat and habituating bears to human presence, to unscrupulous tour operators actively baiting bears to guarantee predictable bear sightings, some of the tourism practices in Churchill pose serious threats to the Hudson Bay polar bears. Check out this video for a picture of “polar bear season” in Churchill. Churchill Northern Studies Centre friend, Mike Goodyear is interviewed.
